Personality:
At the start of Nightbringer, it's been about 1 year since the end of the Great Celestial War, meaning that Satan has also only been alive for 1 year. Since his birth, the only emotion Satan could understand and feel was wrath. Because his brothers were so recently traumatized from their Fall from the Celestial Realm and their subsequent transformation into demons, Satan was left to navigate his way through life in the Devildom mostly on his own.
He didn't do a very good job of it.
His brothers were all terrified of him except for Lucifer because Satan's temper was explosive, which didn't help the ostracization that Satan felt. Satan's brothers would actively avoid him, not wanting to deal with him or his outbursts. They would frequently chain Satan up to furniture or shove him into lockers when he would lose his temper. Unsurprisingly, this left Satan with the impression that they only called him their brother because they were forced to do so. This ostracization, coupled with the identity crisis he was facing due to his unique birth as the aftermath of Lucifer's anger, served as fuel for Satan's own anger, and no one had the patience to calm him down during that first year.
Things improved after that first year, and although he still only felt wrath, the others slowly warmed up to Satan. They eventually discovered that he really was capable of feeling something other than destructive anger. This is mostly due to the Main Character (MC), the same one from the future timeline, showing up in the past of the Nightbringer era and getting involved with the brothers. Because of MC's influence, the brothers were able to become more comfortable with themselves and their new life in the Devildom, which meant that they could finally have the patience to try to understand Satan.
Over the course of Nightbringer, Satan is able to develop a stronger sense of self and makes an effort to better contain his wrath, even though Satan believes the wrath is who he is at his core. He becomes fascinated by cats, which essentially become his happy place and always, without fail, calms him down. Although he still has difficulty trusting how genuine his brothers are in their efforts to include him in the family, a part of him believes they might care a little. It helps that when his brothers were offered the opportunity to become angels again on the condition they abandoned Satan, all of them declined. Once that initial trust with his family is built, Satan is able to start truly interacting with people outside of his family in a calm and patient manner (for the most part).
Flash forward to the future/main timeline, a good 1,000 years have passed since the events of Nightbringer. All of the brothers' relationships with each other have severely deteriorated, especially what little positive feeling there was between Satan and Lucifer. For the most part, Satan is well-behaved, following the rules and doing what he's supposed to... unless it was something Lucifer told him to do... sometimes.
Early on, Satan masks however he might be feeling with either polite or charming smiles, although sometimes it becomes too much for him and his mask slips, revealing his true irritation or anger. Even so, his temper tantrums become less frequent, although they're still just as violent, and are mostly directed at whatever room he happens to be in. In exchange for being able to keep a level-head through most emotionally charged situations, Satan now tends to lose his temper primarily over things that mildly inconvenience him more than anything, but he does still have other things that trigger his temper, too, like Lucifer.
In the 1,000 years or so since Nightbringer, Satan has made an effort to build up his knowledge to earn the respect of his brothers and people around him. He primarily uses books to do this, but he's not afraid of research or trying things out himself to learn. He may talk about wanting to hurt, humiliate, or sometimes even kill Lucifer, but his deepest desire is to find a meaning for his existence. When others compare him to Lucifer, who is responsible for Satan's birth in the first place, and who had the biggest hand in molding Satan into who he is, Satan cannot help but lose his temper. It frustrates and scares him that people might think of him as a stand-in for Lucifer. That's why, even 1,000 years later, Satan is doing what he can to separate himself from Lucifer so that others will find use in his existence and not just as a fallback if Lucifer isn't around.
With the help of MC, the brothers slowly repair their relationships with one another (again), and this helps mellow Satan out significantly. He often volunteers to help his brothers out, even if they don't always do the same in return for him. He will cook light for his brothers when they're sick, remind them to get rest and take care of themselves, and in general becomes more open about the care he has for his brothers. Even his relationship with Lucifer improves, although that doesn't erase the fact that Satan doesn't like to be compared to him.
Family matters aside, Satan has developed into an individual with his own interests. In particularly, he loves catwatching, detective novels, and coming up with poisons and curses to mildly inconvenience Lucifer. He will often go to social events, but at the same time doesn't go out of his way to talk to anyone. Even so, he's willing to engage in small talk, being genuinely interested because he likes learning new things, even if they're not "big" things. His love of cats has also developed to the point where he doesn't go anywhere without cat biscuits for any strays he may come across. He has developed a strong sense of empathy for others, often noting when someone is acting different from their usual selves or when someone is trying to hide something. He has also developed something along the lines of pridefulness, but not to the point where he's unable to apologize for being wrong. He is still rather honest and straightforward, though.
For people who Satan considers to be a friend, he cares greatly for their wellbeing. If he believes someone is feeling sad, he will go out of his way to cheer them up by bringing them something they enjoy, like their favorite snack, but his go-to "get well" idea is to bring that person somewhere they can pet a lot of cats. However, while he may be polite and respectful to strangers, it often takes a lot to get him to warm up to someone enough to take off the "perfectly polite young man" mask.
At the end of the day, while Satan can still be rather aloof, his relationship with MC and his brothers have helped him come to care about people so he can develop closer relationships.
Past @ Songerein
Satan was in game from Sept 4, 2021 to early February 2023 and I would like for him to keep his memories. During that time, he made some very positive CR with Zelda (BotW) and Mei (Turning Red), who helped him come to be more empathetic toward humans in general. While Satan has mellowed a lot by the time of his canon point, his friendship with them encouraged Satan to be more tolerant of others.
Especially with Zelda, with whom he made a pact. Well, as much of a pact as you can get in Song, anyway. Zelda melted his frosty heart and they shared a lot of long-winded thoughts about different aspects of life (in general), their lives, etc.
He had other CR as well, although a large chunk of it has dropped, like Mei. A couple are still around like Alastor (Hazbin Hotel), but the above CR was his most important cross-canon CR.
Abilities & Inventory:
Inventory
• The clothes on his back
• His D.D.D., which is like a stylized smartphone. It won't work in this world, but it will serve as a friendly reminder of all the cute cat image boards he's not able to view from here. He can probably charge it with dreamotion/crystals/etc to use it as a camera, though.
Affinity for Magic
Satan is naturally gifted at magic. This includes elemental magic, which is common for demons to know, as well as healing magic, which is a rare ability/discipline. He is also highly skilled with curses and can typically cast curses and undo others' curses with ease. Said curses can range from forcing two people to magically hold hands, taking away someone's ability to speak, and just straight up causing them to suffer varying amounts of pain.
Demon Form
Like his brothers, by the "present timeline," Satan spends most of his time in a form that looks no different than that of a human's. However, also like his brothers, any strong emotion can cause an involuntary shift into his demon form. For Satan, this is the addition of ramlike horns and a long, draconic tail that he typically keeps coiled around his leg. It doesn't give him any extra power, but an involuntary shift into this form does show a lack of emotional control. He can shift into his demon form voluntarily as well, and would be expected to be in his demon form at certain events in canon.
Wrath Aura
Similarly to Lucifer, when Satan gets angry, a physical aura manifests. It is capable of destroying a room, or a building, and for that reason Satan does his best to not let himself get that angry. In Song, it would probably just be strong enough to destroy the furniture in the room, and maybe some of the foundation itself.
Pacts
Although rare, demons can and do make pacts. They are limited to making pacts with humans (or at the very least, they cannot make pacts with other demons). Typically, it is a mutually beneficial relationship where the demon gives some sort of boon or other power to the human. The reason pacts are rare is because they make the demon vulnerable, as they are technically forced to be subservient to the human while the pact is active. It also allows the human to summon the demon to their side at any time, with no say from the demon. So, if a human intentionally makes a demand of the demon, then the demon's free will is overridden and they must obey - but they can still complain about it. On the other hand, if a human is willing to give the demon free will, then the demon isn't forced to do anything. When the human who entered the pact dies, the demon is usually rewarded with their soul to do with as they please. However, because demons are able to set the terms of their own pacts (what the demon will offer and what the demon will receive upon the human's death), pacts can be as simple as "I'll give you my power, and my reward upon your death will be the good memories we've made." This is essentially the pact Satan has with MC in the game, and also the pact he made with Zelda (BotW) before his departure from Song.
Suitability & Plans:
Essentially the same as before. I played Satan for about a year and a half here before taking a break and I wanted to try and pick up where I left off. Some of his CR is still here so I'd like for him to build those relationships, but also to make new ones. He has a hard time letting down his walls, so just getting him out there, talking to people, and learning to appreciate the good in other people is basically my objective.
Test Drive Sample: Sample
Questions:
1. Will Satan's Journal still have a record of conversations past during the time while he was here (and presumably blank for the time he was gone)? Or will it be a fresh new journal and/or up to player preference?
2. Are the cat-bees still around........ He wants to go find the one he had.
